# Credits and spend limits

Runtype credit pays for model calls and built-in tools that run on Runtype's platform keys. This page shows how to check your balance, keep automatic top-up working, cap your monthly spend, and find your log retention period. For plans, invoices, and the billing portal, see [Billing and plans](/user-guide/settings/billing-and-plans).

Usage on your own provider API keys (BYOK) doesn't draw on credit and doesn't count toward a spend cap. Your provider bills you for it directly.

## Check your credit balance

To see your balance, open **Settings > Billing** and find the **Credits** card. For each credit type, the card shows the following:

* The amount remaining.
* The amount used, out of the amount granted.
* The next expiry date, if the credit expires.

The **Runtype credits** row covers model calls and built-in tools that run on Runtype's keys. The progress bar turns amber after you use 90% of the granted credit.

If some of your credit expires in the next 14 days, the row names the amount and the date. Unused credit doesn't carry over after it expires, so spend it or plan for it before that date.

## Keep automatic top-up working

When your credit runs out, Runtype charges your default payment method to add more. Your executions keep running while the top-up completes. A dashboard banner tells you that your saved payment method will be charged.

Automatic top-up charges only a card that is set as the default. A saved card that isn't the default isn't charged. To check your card, open **Settings > Billing** and read the **What happens next** card:

| What the card shows | What to do |
| ------------------------------------------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **No charge is scheduled now** | Nothing. Your default card is charged when your credit needs a top-up. |
| **Your card is not set up for automatic payments yet** | Wait a few minutes. If the message stays, click **Manage payment method** and set the card as the default. |
| **Action required: add a payment method** | Click **Add payment method** and add a card. |
| **Action required: payment is past due** | Click **Update payment method** and update the card. |

If automatic top-up can't run when your credit runs out, models and built-in tools that use platform keys stop working. Models that use your own keys keep working. For the messages that you see in that case, see [When billing stops platform-key usage](/user-guide/settings/billing-and-plans#when-billing-stops-platform-key-usage).

### Low-credit warnings

Runtype warns you before your credit runs out only when automatic top-up can't charge a card. The warning appears when your balance falls to \$2.50 or to 10% of your granted credit, whichever is lower. The dashboard shows **Credit balance is running low** with the amount remaining, and Runtype sends a warning email.

## Set a monthly spend cap

A spend cap pauses new executions when your month-to-date Runtype-billed usage reaches an amount that you choose. Caps are off until you set one.

### Before you begin

In an organization, you must be an organization admin to change the spend cap. Other members see the cap but can't change it. For roles, see [Team members and permissions](/user-guide/settings/team-members-and-permissions).

### Set or change the cap

To set or change the cap, follow these steps:

1. In **Settings > Billing**, find the **Usage toward your monthly cap** card.
2. Click **Set a cap**. If a cap exists, click **Change cap**.
3. In **Cap amount (USD)**, enter the amount in US dollars.
4. Click **Save**. The card shows your month-to-date usage as a share of the cap.

To remove your cap, click **Clear cap**.

### How the cap applies

The cap works as follows:

* It counts only usage that Runtype bills, which is model calls and built-in tools on platform keys.
* It covers a calendar month in UTC and resets at 00:00 UTC on the first day of the next month. The card shows the reset date.
* Runtype checks it when an execution starts. Executions that are already running can finish, so your final usage can be slightly higher than the cap.
* A cap of \$0 pauses all new executions.
* The highest cap that you can set is \$20,000,000.

When you reach the cap, the card shows **Cap reached. New executions are paused.** The API returns `402` with the code `SPEND_LIMIT_EXCEEDED`. To resume, raise or clear the cap, or wait for the reset. For the error response, see [Rate limits and usage](/user-guide/troubleshooting-faq/rate-limits-and-usage).

### Spend cap emails

Runtype emails you when your month-to-date usage reaches 50%, 80%, and 100% of your cap. You get each of these emails at most once per month. If your usage passes more than one level at the same time, you get only the email for the highest level. In an organization, the email goes to up to three members, admins first. In a personal account, it goes to you.

## Log retention by plan

Your plan sets how long Runtype keeps your logs. The following table lists the retention period for each plan:

| Plan | Log retention |
| ---------- | ------------- |
| Launch | 1 day |
| Team | 90 days |
| Enterprise | Custom |

The **Logs** page shows your retention period in a banner, such as **Logs retained for 1 day on the Launch plan**. Plans with unlimited retention don't show the banner. On a plan with 1-day retention, the banner includes an **Upgrade for longer retention** link.

Log entries older than your retention period are no longer available. To keep entries longer, export them first or upgrade your plan. For export steps, see [Working with logs](/user-guide/logs/working-with-logs).
