# What are Organizations?

An organization is a shared account for a team that builds AI Products together. Use an organization to share resources, manage billing, and collaborate with team members. Your personal account stays separate from each organization.

## Organizations and personal accounts

You have a personal account and can belong to multiple organizations. The account context that you select determines which resources, settings, billing, and usage data you see.

Personal accounts and organizations differ in the following ways:

| | Personal account | Organization |
| ------------------ | ----------------------- | ------------------------------------- |
| Members | Only you | You and the members you invite |
| Roles | None | **Admin** or **Member** |
| Resource ownership | Resources belong to you | Resources belong to the organization |
| Billing and usage | Your own plan and usage | One plan and usage total for the team |
| API keys | Not available | Keys belong to the organization |

We recommend that you create a separate organization for each client or team.

## Shared resources

An organization owns the resources that its members create while the organization is active. For example, if you create a Flow in an organization, every member of that organization can work with it. The Flow belongs to the organization, not to your personal account.

Organization-scoped resources include the following:

* **AI resources**: Flows, Agents, Products, Records and record collections, Tools, Skills, eval suites, and schedules.
* **Secrets**: Stored credentials that Flows and Tools reference.
* **Model credentials**: Organization connections to AI model providers. After an **Admin** selects **Use for the organization**, every member's runs use the connection, and so do scheduled and API-triggered runs.
* **Integrations**: Organization connections, such as Slack and Google Workspace.
* **Billing**: The organization's subscription plan and usage.
* **Execution logs**: Logs for executions that use organization resources, subject to your plan's retention period.

Credentials for an integration that doesn't use organization connections stay scoped to the member who connected it. To select a model provider connection for the organization, see [Select a connection for the organization](/user-guide/integrations/connecting-ai-model-providers#select-a-connection-for-the-organization).

Resources in your personal account stay in your personal account. They don't appear in an organization that you create or join. Before you create a resource, check the account context in your account menu.

## API keys and account context

API keys belong to an organization, so you can create them only while an organization is active. A key acts in the organization that was active when you created it. Switching organizations in the dashboard doesn't change what an existing key can reach, and you can't move a key to another organization. To call the API for a different organization, switch to that organization and create a key there. For details, see [Managing API keys](/user-guide/settings/managing-api-keys).

## Switch between organizations

You can switch between organizations without signing out. To switch account context, follow these steps:

1. At the bottom of the sidebar, click your account menu.
2. Click **Switch organization**.
3. Select the organization or personal account that you want to use.

The name of the active organization appears under **Switch organization** in the account menu.

## Join an organization

An **Admin** invites you to an organization by email. To join the organization, follow these steps:

1. Open the invitation email and click the link.
2. If you aren't signed in, sign in or create an account. The page is titled **Join your team** or shows the standard sign-in form. If you're already signed in, Runtype skips this step.

The dashboard opens in the organization. Later, to return to the organization, use **Switch organization** in your account menu.

## Create an organization

You can create organizations only in the dashboard. You become an **Admin** of each organization that you create. To create an organization, follow these steps:

1. At the bottom of the sidebar, click your account menu.
2. Click **Switch organization**.
3. Click **Create Organization**.
4. Enter a name in **Organization Name**.
5. Click **Create Organization**.

Runtype switches you to the new organization. Its name appears under **Switch organization** in the account menu. You can then invite members and configure shared settings.
