# Managing Runtype with Claude

> Connect the Claude app to Runtype with a custom connector and manage your Flows, Agents, and Records from Claude.

Connect your Runtype account to Claude through the hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. Use Claude to manage Surfaces, Agents, Flows, Records, and other resources in your account.

Runtype uses OAuth for the connection. You authorize access in your browser without sharing your Runtype credentials with Claude.

This page covers the Claude app. If you use a coding agent such as Claude Code or Cursor, run one command to set up the connection. For instructions, see [Connect Runtype to coding agents](/developer-guides/integrations/connect-coding-agents).

## Before you begin

You need the following:

* A Runtype account. Sign in to the Runtype dashboard at least once so that your account setup is complete.
* A Claude plan that lets you add custom connectors.

## Set up the connection

To connect the Claude app to Runtype, follow these steps:

1. In Claude, open **Settings > Connectors**.
2. Click **Add custom connector**.
3. Enter `Runtype` as the connector name and `https://api.runtype.com/v1/mcp/protocol` as the connector URL.
4. Click **Add**. The connector appears in your list.
5. Click **Connect** for the Runtype connector to start authorization. The **Authorize MCP Client** page opens in the Runtype dashboard. Sign in if the dashboard asks you to.
6. If you belong to more than one organization, select the organization for Claude to manage in the **Authorize in** list.
7. Click **Authorize**. The dashboard returns you to Claude.
8. Confirm that **Configure** appears for the Runtype connector.

The connection works with one organization. To manage a different organization, disconnect Claude and connect again, then select the other organization in step 6.

> **Warning**
>
> Authorizing gives Claude read and write access to almost every resource in the organization you select, including Flows, Agents, Records, Products, Schedules, Evals, and Secrets. Claude can also read the list of your API keys. Review what Claude plans to change before you approve a tool call.

The authorization lasts 90 days. It doesn't renew automatically. After it expires, click **Connect** for the Runtype connector in Claude again.

## What you can do

After you connect, ask Claude in plain language. For example:

* "List my Runtype Flows and Agents."
* "Create a Flow that summarizes support tickets."
* "Run my ticket summary Flow with this ticket and show me the result."
* "Show my Records in the leads collection."
* "Run my support eval suite and summarize the failures."
* "Why did my last Flow run fail?"
* "Pause the nightly Schedule."

When Claude runs a Flow, it shows the result in the conversation, so you can test behavior and iterate. For a long run, Claude can start the Flow in the background and check its status until the run finishes.

This connection lets you manage Runtype from Claude. To let Claude use a Product that you built, publish the Product through an MCP Surface instead. For more information, see [Setting up an MCP Surface](/user-guide/products-surfaces/setting-up-an-mcp-surface).

## Disconnect Claude

Each authorization creates an API key in the organization, named `MCP Client (CLIENT_ID)`, where `CLIENT_ID` is the ID that Claude registered. The key appears in **Settings > API**, not in **Settings > Connected apps**.

To remove Claude's access, follow these steps:

1. In Claude, open **Settings > Connectors** and remove the Runtype connector.
2. In the Runtype dashboard, open **Settings > API**.
3. Delete the key whose name starts with `MCP Client`.

For more information, see [Managing API keys](/user-guide/settings/managing-api-keys).

## Troubleshooting

The following list describes common connection problems:

* **The connection fails with an error that says the account has no workspace organization yet**: your account setup isn't complete. Sign in to the Runtype dashboard and finish setup, then click **Connect** in Claude again.
* **The dashboard shows Authorization Failed**: click **Try Again** to return to the authorization page, or click **Connect** for the Runtype connector in Claude to start again.
* **You clicked Deny**: Claude doesn't get access. Click **Connect** for the Runtype connector in Claude to start again.
* **Runtype tools stop working after some time**: the 90-day authorization expired. Click **Connect** for the Runtype connector in Claude again.
